We think online learning broke at the wrong end
The industry got extraordinarily good at getting people to enrol, and never fixed the part where they quit in week three. Skill.re is an attempt to fix the second half.
What we believe
Structure beats motivation. People do not fail to finish courses because they lack discipline. They fail because nothing in a self-paced catalog notices when they stop. There is no Thursday, no group, no consequence — so quitting is free. Every design decision on this platform follows from that one observation.
A cohort is the smallest thing that works. Not a forum of ten thousand people. Not a coach you cannot afford. Just the handful of people who started the same week you did, made visible to each other. That is enough to change the default from “drift away” to “keep up”.
A credential should cost something to earn. If a certificate is issued for watching videos, it is not evidence of anything and everyone involved knows it. Above L2, a human reads your work. That is slower and more expensive than autograding, and it is the entire point. Our methodology is public, including what the certificate does not claim.
Free until it isn’t worth paying for. Every course in the catalog is free right now — all 249 levels. We would rather build the thing people finish than monetise the thing people abandon. When money enters, it enters per course, from the provider, visible before you enrol. We wrote that down properly.
What we are not
We are not the biggest catalog, and we are not trying to be. There are platforms with a hundred thousand courses and a single-digit completion rate; that trade is available elsewhere. We are also not accredited, not a licensing body, and not a replacement for a degree — and we say so on the methodology page rather than letting the ambiguity do marketing work for us.
Where we are
Skill.re is early. 129 cohorts are running, the catalog spans sectors from government and banking to healthcare, energy and small business, and the platform is free while we grow. We are building in the open in the sense that matters: what is live is what is described on this site, and where something is not built yet, we say so rather than implying it.
